Rossier, Pierre
This stereoview is from the famous Negretti & Zambra series 'Views in China' and was photographed by Pierre Rossier. The importance of this series is that it represents the first commercially published photographs of China. This view shows the initials 'NZ' scratched into the negative - something that only appeared in the first published series. Views from this series are now rare; this one is in very good condition. ROSSIER, Pierre Joseph (1829 -c.1897) was a Swiss professional photographer hired by the London firm Negretti & Zambra to bring back stereoview photographs of the Far East. Rossier was in China 1858-1862 and produced a series of more than eighty views and portraits. In December 1858 he opened a temporary portrait studio in Hong Kong. His were the first commercial views of China to be published, in April 1859.
