Important and rare print from the 1871 series taken in the grounds of Edo Castle. Shimooka took some 145 photographs at this time. He failed to get permision from the authorities to offer them on the general market and therefore sold them off to foreigners. How many he was able to sell, and whether these were prints or negatives is not known. Examples from this series appear in Asahi Graph 1925 and pp.46 & 47 of Shimooka Renjo: A Pioneer of Japanese Photography, a book which accompanied the exhibition 'A Retrospective on Shimooka Renjo, 100 years after his death' at Tokyo Metropolitant Museum, March 4-May 6, 2014. This photograph is laid down on publisher's card, 250 x 350mm, with the printed name at the bottom: E.Ziégler, Editeur. Paris 35, Boulevard des Capucines. Ziégler operated from this address 1876-1884.
